Preparing For Dental Implants With Bone Grafting in Amarillo, TX

Over time, missing teeth will cause the jawbone to atrophy. In this case, some patients require a bone graft prior to the placement of an implant. Bone grafting requires augmenting a patient’s jaw using supplemental bone tissue. Grafts can either utilize the patient’s own tissue or donated bone tissue.

Preparing for Dental Implants with Bone Grafting in Amarillo

Whenever missing teeth go for too long, the jawbone deteriorates over that time. This leaves the bone in poor quality and quantity.  When the bone is too little and too weak from atrophy, the patient will not qualify for the placement of dental implants.

Fortunately, medical innovations have allowed for the development of an effective way to enable the body to grow bone where it is needed. This innovation is known as bone grafting. This procedure provides for the placement of dental implants and helps restore the jawbone’s functionality and aesthetic appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bone Grafting (FAQ)

What is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a procedure done to repair the jawbone from deprivation and weakness. The insufficient structure of the jaw is caused by gum injuries or disease and previous tooth extractions. The bone grafting procedure is necessary to place dental implants.

The bone graft is taken from either tissue donors or from a patient’s own bone on the hips, tibia, or jaw. Sinus bone grafts replace the posterior upper jawbones. Moreover, special membranes, which dissolve under the gum, encourage bone regeneration and protect the bone graft. This process is known as guided tissue or bone regeneration.

Why is Bone Grafting Done?

Bone grafting is generally performed to repair substantial defects of the jawbone. These deficiencies are a result of various conditions. Causes for jawbone deficits may include congenital defects, tumor surgery, and traumatic injuries. The defects are repaired using the person’s own bone, which is harvested from different parts of the body. If the patient’s own bone is not sufficient, tissue from a donor can be used.

Depending on the dimensions of the defect, the bone grafts are usually taken from the patient’s tibia or lateral knee, hip, and skull. Generally, these procedures are more major and require an operating room and a hospital stay.
