Whenever possible, dentists try to save patient’s teeth. It’s always more ideal for patients to have as much of their natural tooth structure preserved as possible, which is why many dental health professionals work conservatively when doing dental work.

The team at our cosmetic dentistry practice would like to look at a few moments right now to look at some common causes of tooth loss and what can be done to address these matters.

Tooth Loss and Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is a common dental health issue, and one that we often address at our dental care center. If left untreated, tooth decay can compromise the majority of a person’s tooth structure, resulting in major damage to the tooth overall and potential tooth loss.

A mix of good dental hygiene and early treatment is the best way to avoid tooth loss from tooth decay.

Tooth Loss and Injuries to the Mouth

Injuries of all kinds can cause tooth damage to occur. In some cases, the injury to the tooth may be so severe that the tooth is broken or knocked out of place entirely.

When possible, patients are asked to bring the tooth to their dental care center, preferably kept in a small container of milk or water. If the patient acts soon enough, it may be possible to save the tooth.

To avoid tooth loss from injury, we suggest that people wear helmets and protective mouth guards when it is applicable.

Tooth Loss and Dental Erosion

Though similar to tooth decay, dental erosion involves the weakening of tooth structure as a result of acidic damage to the teeth rather than bacterial damage. This happens when the pH in the mouth is no longer basic/neutral. Dental erosion that progresses too far along will result in the loss of the tooth due to major structural damage.

As with tooth decay, good dental hygiene and early treatment is the best way to avoid this kind of tooth loss.

Tooth Loss and Gum Disease

Many people don’t realize this, but gum disease can result in the loss of teeth. This often occurs when gum disease is allowed to progress to its most serious stage, advanced periodontitis. When gum disease is this advanced, the teeth become loose and may fall out since the gum tissue is no longer strong.

Prevention and early treatment of gum disease is the best way to save the teeth in these cases.

Treating Tooth Loss Through Advanced Dentistry

If you do lose a tooth or multiple teeth for whatever reasons, do not fret. Dental bridges and dentures can be used to restore the appearance and functionality of a smile. In additional, dental implants may be used in order to support dental bridges and dentures, providing excellent stability.
