Frequently Asked Questions About Broken Dentures (FAQ)

Does My Denture Need Repairing?

Dr. Damon recommends that patients with removable dentures have them relined every two years and replaced after eight years. This recommendation does not apply to patients with implant-supported dentures, which do not require relining and are designed to last significantly longer than traditional types.

Even if you take great care of your dentures, they will still experience natural wear and tear with normal use. As time passes, your prosthesis can develop different forms of damage, such as a cracked artificial tooth or a fractured denture base. Additionally, when a person experiences tooth loss, the surrounding area of the jawbone will begin to lose density, affecting the fit of your denture and compromising its strength.

When these issues go uncorrected, your weakened denture can actually begin to impact your oral health negatively. Regardless of how the damage was caused, Dr. Damon and his skilled staff can help your partial or complete denture look and feel like new.

How Do Dentures Break?

There are typically two types of denture breakages – denture tooth breakage/teeth coming off the denture or the denture breaking in half. In either scenario, the denture may be able to be repaired.

Please note: do not try to fix a cracked denture yourself. If you try to glue the denture back together and you do not get it 100% precise, then you have guaranteed that you just eliminated any chance of getting that denture repaired. We can fix broken dentures Monday – Thursday. There is no emergency denture repair available.

Why Do Dentures Break?

Many factors can contribute to a denture break; however, the most common reason for this problem is time. Over time, bone resorption or atrophy occurs. This causes the supporting tissues to have a small gap between the denture and the gums.

When you received your dentures, your dentist likely told you that they typically require relining every 2 – 3 years. After 5 – 7 years, they will need to be replaced altogether. Did you know your dentures are involved in 1,200,000 million chewing cycles every year? It’s no wonder they require upkeep.

How Long Does It Take To Repair Broken Dentures?

For a simple break, like repairing a denture tooth, denture repairs can take about one hour. If the denture is cracked, it may take up to four hours. You’ll find this to be an extremely short turn-around time if you have ever had a denture repaired with another dental practice. Most other dentists do not have an in-house lab – in which case, it may take days, even up to a week or more, to have your dentures repaired.

What Is the Process?

Firstly you will need to call us for a consultation. At your consultation, Dr. Damon or Dr. Mohr will determine if your broken denture can be fixed and, if so – how. In most cases, we need to take a reline impression for either a reline or a rebase.

Once we have the impression, we grind down the damaged areas and then add acrylic to fix them. After, the repaired areas are cured, trimmed, polished, cleaned, and returned to you.
